Swimming

Swimming is fun and we make sure that our children enjoy the water in a safe environment. The lessons are designed to ensure that all children, whatever their ability, can achieve their full potential.

We start by moving through the water both on the front and the back with games and toys, then moving on to more structured lessons. Following the Amateur Swimming Association's Awards Scheme we try to ensure that every child achieves one certificate a term which is presented in assembly. In this way all children have a goal to aim for.

What will your child need?

Your child will need a regulation blue swimming costume or trunks, a hat (all available from the school uniform shop) and a towel. At the beginning of their swimming career each child wears a red hat until they can swim a length without armbands. Once they have achieved that all important 15 metres, they may wear a white hat which can be obtained from their swimming teacher.

What will your child learn?

Children at Hethersett swim once a week within school time from Lower Prep to Year 6. Lessons are varied covering both stroke technique and skills, aquafit, personal survival and life saving techniques, tailored to meet individual needs.

Once in the Senior School, the swimming does not stop; Years 7, 8 and 9 swim in class time working on improving personal survival, general skills, rescue skills, competitive starts and turns, speed swimming and water polo.

Year 9 has recreational lessons whilst Years 10 and 11 have lessons tailored with a view to GCSE PE; girls regularly use personal survival, general skills or life-saving for assessment.

The majority of Year 11 girls finish the year as a qualified Life Saver, having gained their R.L.S.S. Bronze Medallion and their Resuscitation Certificate.
