Junior Department (age 7 to 11)
Years 3 to 6
There are some exciting new changes ahead for the Junior Department with the introduction of boys into Year 3 from September 2008, but its commitment to high quality teaching, pastoral care and small class sizes will remain the same.
Pupils move to the Junior Department at the end of Year 2. A maximum class size of 18 ensures a friendly, supportive environment, where the class teacher can develop the basic skills and can monitor the progress of each individual pupil. There are, however, greater opportunities to access the facilities of the Senior school and pupils may be taught by subject specialists, particularly in Year 6 in preparation for the transition to Senior school.
The curriculum is broad and imaginative and designed to stimulate a child’s natural curiosity. Pupils receive a thorough grounding in the core subjects i.e. English, Maths and Science as required by the National curriculum, but the staff aim to engender a love for learning and provide education in its truest sense.
Sport plays a big part in the Junior Department. The packed programme is being extended to include tag rugby, cricket and football. All pupils have the opportunity to take part in extra curricular sports clubs and to represent the school in competitions and galas.
The purpose built Junior Department is bright and welcoming and has its own resource area for art and technology. Music and drama are fully integrated into the curriculum and opportunities exist for individual music tuition and speech and drama lessons. It is expected that the annual production will continue to take place at the Norwich Playhouse.
