ESOL and International Students
Years 5-13
Girls aged 9-18
Hethersett Old Hall School has always welcomed international students. Past and existing students come from throughout Asia and Europe. We know that our international girls have left our school not only with a deeper understanding of the English language and culture, but with life-long friends and memories.
"As an international student, the warm and welcoming atmosphere did make settling into the UK lifestyle much easier..."
Wind Chi 'Toby' Chan
"It is a very friendly place with patient teachers to whom you can feel very close. The small classes allow us to get lots of attention during lessons."
Suet Ying 'Angela' Chan
Our ESOL Department
Our ESOL department is second to none and provides extra support and tuition to pupils learning English.
Elaine Boar, our ESOL Co-ordinator says:
"I feel it is vital to emphasise the high overall level of academic and pastoral support provided to overseas students. We understand the difficulties they often experience away from home, whether they are from Europe or further afield.
Nothing is taken for granted and we have a sympathetic and caring approach. We recognise that overseas students play an extremely important part in all aspects of school life and they are given every encouragement to participate in, and benefit from, both mainstream lessons and extra-curricular activities".
What can our independent school offer to international students?
We provide our international students with a friendly and ordered environment in which they may develop academic and personal strengths and become confident, accomplished young women.
Our girls are educated to extremely high standards by experienced, caring and committed staff. We provide a broad, forward-looking curriculum for junior, senior and sixth form pupils that offers a wide range of academic and vocational courses, as well as exciting extra-curricular and boarding activities.
Entrance requirements
Girls must sit entrance assessments in maths and English. We will arrange for papers to be sent to the applicant in their home country. On receipt of the completed assessments, our teaching and ESOL staff will assess the results and consider whether the girl would be able to cope with our mainstream curriculum if they also had specialist ESOL support tailored to their requirements. We would normally ask for a minimum of the Cambridge ESOL Preliminary English Test (PET) or equivalent for entry onto our GCSE and A level courses.
We also require a reference from the girl's current school and a copy of their latest school report.
It is on the basis of all this information, that a place is offered.
