Welcome! Bienvida! Welkom! Foon ying! Yra sunsa ketetper! Bienvenue! Willkommen!

Hethersett Old Hall School has always welcomed international girls, aged 9-19, on a short- and long-term basis and they are an important part of school life at Hethersett.

Past students and existing students come from throughout Asia, Europe and Africa. We know that our international girls have left our school not only with a deeper understanding of the English language and culture, but with life-long friends and memories.

"As an international student, the warm and welcoming atmosphere did make settling into the UK lifestyle much easier..."

Wind Chi 'Toby' Chan

"It is a very friendly place with patient teachers to whom you can feel very close. The small classes allow us to get lots of attention during lessons."

Suet Ying 'Angela' Chan

What can we offer to international students?

Hethersett Old Hall School provides our international students with a friendly and ordered environment in which they may develop academic and personal strengths and become confident, accomplished young women.

Our girls are educated to extremely high standards by experienced, caring and committed staff. We provide a broad, forward-looking curriculum for our junior, senior and sixth form pupils that enables them to study a wide range of academic and vocational courses and take qualifications including GCSEs, iGCSEs, AS and A Levels gaining excellent exam results

Our ESOL department

Our dedicated ESOL department provides extra support to our international students and offers a range of ESOL study programmes, including our ESOL Authentic English Programme and ESOL 3-Year A Level, to pupils learning English. We can prepare pupils to take a wide range of internationally recognised ESOL qualifications, such as the Cambridge Board international exams, IELTS and SATs.

Elaine Boar, our ESOL Co-ordinator says:

"I feel it is vital to emphasise the high overall level of academic and pastoral support provided to overseas students. We understand the difficulties they often experience away from home, whether they are from Europe or further afield.

Nothing is taken for granted and we have a sympathetic and caring approach. We recognise that overseas students play an extremely important part in all aspects of school life and they are given every encouragement to participate in, and benefit from, both mainstream lessons and extra-curricular activities".

Life at Hethersett

Academic studies are important but our international girls also benefit greatly from the exciting range of extra-curricular activities available and boarding activities that take place in the evenings and at weekends. These give pupils the opportunity to fully experience the English culture and our local area

Entrance requirements for international students

We would normally ask girls to have gained a minimum of the Cambridge ESOL Preliminary English Test (PET) or equivalent for entry onto our GCSE courses, and a minimum of five GCSEs (or their equivalent) grades A*- C for entry onto our AS and A level courses. However, we do consider every applicant individually and if you do not have these qualifications we would ask youto sit our entrance assessments in maths and English.

We will arrange for test papers to be sent to you in your home country. On receipt of the completed assessments, our teaching and ESOL staff will assess the results and consider whether you would be able to cope with our mainstream curriculum if you also had specialist ESOL support tailored to your requirements.

Finally, we also require a reference from your current school and a copy of your latest school report.

It is on the basis of all this information, that a place is offered.
