Overview of our School
Hethersett Old Hall School, established in 1938, is an independent day school for girls aged 4-18 and boys aged 4-11, and a boarding school for girls aged 9-18. The school has a Christian ethos but welcomes pupils of all beliefs. Our school is very close-knit with just over 200 pupils in small class sizes, and has four departments: Pre-Prep (girls and boys aged 4-7), Juniors (girls and boys aged 7-11), Seniors (girls aged 11-16) and a Sixth Form (girls aged 16-19).
Our Location
We are located in 16 acres of beautiful Norfolk countryside in the village of Hethersett, just minutes from the medieval city of Norwich and Norwich International Airport. It takes less than an hour to get from our school to the scenic east coast, 1 hour to reach historic Cambridge, 90 minutes to Stansted airport and 2 hours and 30 minutes to London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports. We can arrange drop-offs to and collections from all airports.
Boarding and International Students
As a boarding school we have many British girls who live with us, but we also warmly welcome international students on a long and short-term basis.
We have a dedicated ESOL department which offers ESOL study programmes and enables girls who want to learn and improve their English to go on and take GCSEs, AS Levels and A Levels and ESOL qualifications. Past boarders and current boarders have come from China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Spain, Russia, Germany, Belgium and Nigeria.
We have children from Forces' families at the school too, as one of our strengths is our ability to take boarders between the ages of 9 and 18, allowing them continuity of education. We are also able to offer Forces' families a significant discount on boarding fees. In December 2009, we received a glowing OFSTED report on our boarding provision.
Life in School
For day pupils, we offer a breakfast club and before- and after-school care in the Pre-Prep department. In the Junior and Senior departments day-boarding is included in our school fees, enabling pupils to take advantage of extra-curricular clubs and activities and supervised prep. We are also able to offer flexi-boarding, making life easier for our working parents, or for pupils who travel some distance to school. Our school bus does daily pick-ups across Norfolk, including Norwich train station.
Results and Destinations of Our Pupils
In 2007, 2008 and 2009 all of our girls received an offer at their first choice of University, including Oxford, St Andrews, Loughborough, UEA and the London College of Fashion. In 2009, we were placed Top 5 in the county league table for the percentage of pupils who gained 5 GCSEs or more Grades A*-C. In 2010, we had a 100% pass rate and 74% A*-C grades, the best results in 8 years.
Hethersett Old Hall School is a member of the Independent Schools Council (ISC), Girls' Schools Association (GSA) and the Boarding Schools' Association (BSA), and is a registered charitable trust (number 311273).
