Extra-Curricular Activities

School should be a time and opportunity in life when you enjoy and experience as much as possible.

At Hethersett, we offer a huge range of organised extra-curricular opportunities to help our pupils develop as individuals. We encourage every pupil to try and discover activities which can lead on to life-long hobbies and passions.

In fact when our pupils leave, they often cite the extra-curricular activities they experienced during their time at Hethersett as one of the things that made their time here so enjoyable. Take a look at our 2009 edition of Highlights (PDF) which features many of the things pupils get up to during their time at Hethersett.

During the school year, the following activities are offered:

Two highlights within the school year are the junior and senior school drama productions. These are held at local venues, including The Norwich Playhouse, to give pupils an experience of a real live working theatre environment. Recent productions have included 'Grimm' based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm (2010), 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' (2009) and 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle" (2008). Pupils thoroughly enjoy these productions, and audiences are always impressed with the high level of professionalism shown by the young actors. Pupils can also have private speech and drama lessons taught by the DramActive Academy, and often have the opportunity to go on trips to see live theatre productions during the year.

Music is very popular within the school and many pupils are members of the junior and senior choirs, orchestra, senior strings and recorder groups. Music concerts and recitals are held regularly throughout the school year which parents can attend. There is also an annual House Musical Festival and pupils perform during Morning Prayers. Pupils also have the opportunity to have private singing, piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, drums, guitar and brass tuition. In 2009, the school formed a partnership with Norfolk Concerts, a charity that promotes music in rural areas. Through this partnership pupils have had the opportunity to attend music events and received a workshop from professional musicians in September 2009.

We have excellent sporting facilities, including a large sports hall, extensive sport fields, an on site, indoor heated swimming pool and tennis courts. Regular sporting events are held with local schools during the year, see our fixtures and results and all pupils are encouraged to try out for teams. We also have a traditional annual sports day, which all pupils take part in. The size of our sports fields mean that we are easily able to host sporting tournaments during the school year, for a large number of visiting schools.

Football, hockey, netball, badminton, touch rugby, trampolining, archery, tennis, fencing, cricket, rounders and swimming are just some of the activities that pupils can enjoy during their time at Hethersett.

The school has a long track record of success in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Almost a third of last year's Year 13 girls gained their Gold Award, and a large proportion of Year 10 and 11 girls are working towards their Bronze and Silver Awards at any one time.

The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is based on young people completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five for the Gold Award): physical, skills, expedition, volunteering (and residential).

Boys and girls from Middle- and Upper-Prep and the Junior school can take private Jazz-Modern dance tuition and Senior girls can learn Urban Dance. Both are extremely popular.

Pre-Prep boys and girls can enjoy our After School Club, with a packed programme of activities every week. Their is no charge for the club from 3.00pm - 4.00pm every day and it remains open until 6.00pm.

Other clubs that can run during the school year are Book Club, Ski Club, Art Club, Maths Club and Science Club.
