Boarding Life

Boarding at Hethersett Old Hall School is a positive and active experience for our girls.

We are happy to accept girls to board from age 9 to age 19.

A balanced programme of activities and free time provides a secure and happy environment, which acts as a ‘home away from home’ for our family of boarders.

‘The school is an inclusive community in which all boarders feel safe and valued' Ofsted, December 2009

The three 'houses' within the school; Austen, Fry and Ryder provide boarders with a social base within the school.

Accommodation

Our younger girls share a comfortable, modernised dorm-style room with three or four others in our elegant country house. Take a look at our facilities on our virtual tour. Our sixth-formers reside in modern student-style accommodation, with single or double study bedrooms. Our extensive renovation programme means that these rooms are modern, comfortable with en-suite facilities, and above all relaxing.

Activities

An exciting new schedule of activities means that our girls and boarding staff are busier than ever at the weekend with day trips, theatre and cinema visits, swimming clubs, activity weekends, ten-pin bowling and shopping excursions.

In addition, regular excursions are planned by the school, for example, skiing in Canada and for our older girls, Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions. There are also exeat weekends every half-term, which give girls the perfect opportunity to explore the area or visit family and friends. Take a look at some of the things boarders have been up to in 2009, such as Bonfire Night and a day trip to the coast, in our Photo Gallery.

Food

Food is catered in-house and menus are balanced, healthy and diverse with hot and cold options. Boarders are encouraged to input into the menu. We are accustomed to dealing with pupils' individual dietary needs and can devise specific menu options.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you haven't been to a boarding school before, it is natural to have lots of questions about boarding life. With this in mind, we've answered the most frequently asked questions by boarders, FAQs by Boarders (PDF).

Boarding Options

1. Full-time Boarding

The opportunity to take full advantage of the Hethersett Old Hall School boarding experience. Regular weekend activities and trips ensure that our girls do not get bored, while exeat weekends provide the perfect opportunity to visit family, friends or to explore the area.

We actively welcome international students and past and current boarders come from throughout Asia and Europe.

For more information on full-time boarding take a look at our 2010-11 fees, admissions and international pupil admissions

2. Weekly Boarding

Giving you the best of both worlds, weekly boarding lets you enjoy the benefits of boarding four nights a week, Monday to Friday. It is a perfect compromise for pupils who live some distance from school, who want to avoid a daily commute and enjoy extra-curricular activites.

For more information on weekly boarding visit 2010-2011 fees, admissions and international admissions.

3. Occasional or Flexi-Boarding

Modern life is hectic for everyone. One of the biggest advantages of being a boarding school is that we have the facilities available to help the busiest of parents.

For an extremely reasonable price, your daughter can join us overnight on an ad-hoc basis, enabling her to finish her homework in supervised prep, enjoy a healthy supper, get a good night’s sleep and have breakfast in the morning. We try to be as accommodating as possible and places can be booked at the last minute. For just £250 your daughter can have any 10 nights boarding (must be paid for in advance), or our nightly fee is £30.00.

For more information see 2010-2011 fees.

4. Short-Stay Boarding

We can also offer short-stay boarding options, which are particularly popular with international students  on our 'ESOL Authentic English Experience Programme' enabling them to experience the English schooling system, improve their language skills and take ESOL qualifications. Short-stay boarding is normally for a term, but we can accommodate girls for periods as short as half a term (six weeks).
