Hoorah For The Old Hall
PUPILS PEN PLAY TO CELEBRATE SCHOOL'S BIRTHDAY
Juniors at Hethersett Old Hall School have helped write their school play to celebrate the school's 70th birthday. "Hoorah for the Old Hall" will be performed at the Norwich Playhouse on 10th and 11th June 2008 and was specially written by Year 6 and the play's director Susanne Simpson to commemorate the school's 7 decades.
The play tells the story of 1938 Hethersett Old Hall School girl Lottie, who falls into a time tunnel. Stumbling into the future whilst looking at the past, she finds the courage to face the truth and learns the true meaning of friendship. As the dreamy echoes of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Fred Astaire fill the stage, the audience is transported in time with her.
"Having read the "History of Hethersett Old Hall School" I was inspired by the idea that the children called their first Head Teacher ‘Auntie' and then spoke to Mrs Anthea Iveson, school pupil in 1940s and who as an adult was employed by the school" said Suzanne Simpson, Director.
Mrs CP Andrews opened a school at Hellesdon House in September 1924 for her two daughters, a niece and three friends, but by 1938 the preparatory school had outgrown its premises. Mr & Mrs Andrews bought the Old Hall, Hethersett. Hethersett Old Hall School was born. The school was briefly evacuated to Devon during World War II, but has been going strong since the end of the war.
"Researching the school's history has been fascinating" said Jason Harrison, Admissions and Marketing Manager. "There have been so many changes over the last 70 years not just to the school, but to the way we live. I can't wait to see the play bring the history of the school to life."
"Hoorah for the Old Hall" is on at the Norwich Playhouse from 10th - 11th June 2008 at 7pm. Tickets are £7. (£5 for Under 16s). Call Box office now on 01603 810390 or email enquiries@hohs.co.uk
